Connect the Jooki to Wi-Fi
Moved house, new internet box, new Wi-Fi password? The Jooki only learnt its network from the old app. This page gives it a new one over Bluetooth, from an Android phone or a computer. Nothing to install. (Not from an iPhone: see below.)
The Jooki listens over Bluetooth when it has no Wi-Fi, and this browser cannot use Bluetooth.
On an iPhone or iPad, no page can: Apple keeps Bluetooth away from every web page, whatever the browser, Chrome included. It is not something a setting can change.
Open this page in Chrome (or Edge) on an Android phone, a Windows PC, a Mac or Linux: two minutes, once. Then the Jooki is back on Wi-Fi, and you use it from your iPhone as usual.
No Chrome at hand? A small program for the computer does the same.
Its two side dots may be orange or glowing left and right: that is the Jooki looking for Wi-Fi. Bluetooth must be on here.
A list opens: pick JOOKI2_… then Pair (or Connect).
While it looks, the Jooki leaves its Wi-Fi, until you give it a network here. If you stop halfway, it goes back to its Wi-Fi by itself within about ten minutes when it is on the charger, or switch it off and on.
Only 2.4 GHz networks show: the Jooki cannot use 5 GHz. If yours is missing, come closer to the box, or check the box offers a 2.4 GHz network.
Exactly as written on the box or in its app: capitals, spaces and symbols count.
Sending the network to the Jooki…
It takes about ten seconds.
It does not pick the strongest one: after a short cut it can move to another one it knows, even a far one, and stay there. At start it only looks at the networks before the first empty slot, and forgetting one can leave a gap: after forgetting any, give it the network next to it again (below), which fills the first empty slot. To keep only that one, forget them all, then give it that one. Reading and forgetting here do not take it off its Wi-Fi.
How it works, and what it cannot do
- The Jooki's Wi-Fi chip also speaks Bluetooth, and it always offers the same set-up the old app used at the first start. This page speaks it, straight from the browser: nothing is sent anywhere else.
- The password travels over Bluetooth, over a few metres, without encryption (that is how the Jooki was built). Do it at home.
- Why not from an iPhone or iPad? Apple does not let any web page use Bluetooth, in any browser (Chrome on an iPhone is Safari underneath). The only way round would be an app on the App Store, which OpenJooki does not have. So this one step needs an Android phone or a computer; everything else works from the iPhone.
- The Jooki only does 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi. If your box only shows a 5 GHz network, turn its 2.4 GHz one on.
- Once connected, the Jooki's page is at
http://+ its name +.local, from any phone or computer on that Wi-Fi. Its name isjooki2-…(the name in the Bluetooth list, in small letters, with a hyphen), unless you gave it another one on its page. The address your box shows for it works too. - Prefer a terminal? jooki_wifi.py does the same on Windows, Mac and Linux.
